CULTURAL PRACTICES AND SEXUAL BEHAVIOR IN ORPHANS
INTRODUCTION
My intention is to inform the people reading it that good friends can help the orphans overcome cultural practices and nurture their talents and meet their basic needs
I want to appreciate the HOP community for their constant support to the orphans to overcome cultural beliefs and get Education to better their lives In future.
This article explores community perception of cultural beliefs and practices that may increase sexual risk behavior of school going orphans, to understand more about meaning they hold within the culture and how they expose orphans to higher risks in a HIV and teenage pregnancy prevalence context.
PEER GROUP INFLUENCE
Over 58% of orphans aged between 12-16 years have engage in sex and age 17 years of which 26% orphan girls have given birth in addition 3% of females in this group are infected with HIV/AIDS
ORPHAN LIFE
Orphanhood has been associated with early sexual behavior associated with debuts and engage in sexual practices in exchange of: food, clothing, books, pens, school uniforms and above school levies from the villagers who take advantage their status of being orphan
EARLY MARRIAGE
Both orphans are affected by this practice orphans involve in marriage replacement as it often being decided by caregivers also reported household poverty, many families treat orphans as wild cats(Ogwenge) who are always donated by caregivers in exchange for animals in the form of dowry to benefit the caregivers since orphans have no to care for ,it’s a myth in Africa that an orphans have no Right to education and other basic needs in the community.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT (RAPE)
There is a lot of sexual harassment sometimes neighbours may come and rape an orphan girl in the compound since no one is ready to protect the orphans.
BURIAL/FUNERAL CEREMONY
Orphans are always forced to take part in music and dances in funerals before and burial so as to be given food and other basic needs.
CONCLUSION
Cultural practices are the main cause of poor performance in school and community at large.
TALENTS
Most orphans are talented and are exhibiting their talents in various ways especially in drawing and should be nurtured everyday for their future survival and also economic stability of the orphans.
In my community of which HOP community has played a very important role under the patronage of our beloved coordinator Mr.Adrian who is working round the clock to support them in their daily survival in Rusinga Island Kenya.
